CAMPAIGN PERIOD: 21-27 AUG 2021
Manimekala has two sons, 11 and 5, and earns RM1,300 monthly as a nurse at a private clinic. Her husband is an Indian national who had been deported in 2010 and she has lost contact with him.
Her eldest son who was born in India is unable to attend public schools, so homeschooling is the only choice. His citizenship application has been denied four times. Recently Manimekala learnt that her son can attend public schools provided all the correct documents are produced but these need to be certified in India and would cost about RM650.
Due to her low pay and many expenses, Manimekala is unable to adequately provide for the family, let alone the cost for the document verification. She owes about RM8,000 arrears for a repossessed car and RM4,000 for a dengue treatment for her son at a government hospital because of his citizenship status.
Each day is a struggle for her, but we understand she is courageous in meeting her financial challenges as well as providing what she can for her sons.
Through the generosity of GIFT10 donors during the campaign, Manimekala received a total of RM11,828.
